The Chanchamayo province of Peru is a lush, spectacular mountainous jungle setting, veined with tumbling rivers and cascading waterfalls. Given its natural, rugged beauty and its tremendous bio diversity, coffee growers here treat their organic farming practices and natural shade-canopy as an ecological imperative. We offer our Fair Trade Organic Rainforest Blend in support of these organic farmers, and of the rich rain forest ecology that they labor to protect and defend.

Flavor Chart

The coffees in this blend are South American, and principally from Peru. The roast is a melange — a blend of two roast styles —medium and dark. Dark enough to deliver what lovers of deeply-roasted coffees are looking for... notes of brown sugar, molasses and caramellly, toasted marshmallow sweetness.

Peru is a country of majesty—majestic ruins like Machu Piccu, majestic mountains like the Andes, and majestic cultures like that of the Inca. Increasingly, Peru is also a country of majestic coffee.

Coffee coming from Northern Peru tends to have a sharper quality to its flavor, whereas coffee grown in the central and southern highlands is milder, likely because of lower altitude. We purchase this coffee from La Florida cooperative in the Chanchamayo region of Peru. This particular coop has used the earnings that their fair trade coffee has generated in some very innovative ways. Recently, the cooperative started the Occupational Learning Center for Sustainable Agriculture. This is a technical school that provides education in sustainable farming practices. As a result of this program, coffee growers are better equipped to farm in an environmentally safe manner.

In general, Coffee farmers in Peru contribute significantly to the organic coffee sector. As a result, they receive better prices for their coffee and are able to use more environmentally sound farming practices. These organic farming techniques result in the protection of the immense biodiversity of the region. This coffee is a treat for the taste buds and for the land.
